A Bronx man was arrested in connection with the April 21, 2023, shooting of a Mount Vernon woman inside of a local business. On April 21, 2023, at about 5:30 PM, 48 year-old, Craig Whitfield was involved in a verbal dispute with several people in front of 4 West Third Street. During the dispute, Whitfield produced a handgun and fired a shot into the beauty salon striking a Mount Vernon resident, in the hand. Whitfield fled the area immediately after the shooting. With the help of the FBI Safe Streets Task Force, Mount Vernon Detectives were able to identify Whitfield and determine that he had fled New York to Petersburg, Virginia. On May 18, 2023, Whitfield was taken into custody by members of the FBI Westchester Safe Streets Task Force, FBI Richmond Field Office, and Petersburg Virginia Police Department. On WednesdayMay 31, 2023, Whitfield was extradited back to New York. He was booked in Mount Vernon on the charges of Attempted Murder 2nd Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd Degree. Whitfieldwas arraigned in Mount Vernon City Court on Thursday June 1, 2023, and remanded to the Westchester County Department of Corrections.Whitfield has an extensive and violent criminal history with charges that include robbery, weaponpossession, attempted murder, and manslaughter. At the time of this shooting Whitfield was on parole for a 2012 manslaughter charge out of the Bronx.
