Mount Vernon, NY (12/2/2022) - Last night the City of Mount Vernon hosted its annual Tree Lighting Ceremony at City Hall Plaza, and it was magical. The Christmas spirit was in the air, and everyone filled with cheer!
City Hall was decorated for the holidays and looked amazing. There were inflatable Christmas characters like polar bears, penguins, snowmen, and a giant teddy bear on the plaza. The Tree Lighting Ceremony was a lot of fun. Our Recreation staff was incredible. They served snacks, hot chocolate, and hot cider. Recreation also hosted a raffle gifting attendees who participated and won with gift cards.
Carolers sung renditions of our favorite Christmas classics. Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus and one of Santa's helpers stopped by and took pictures with children and their parents. There were horses and a carriage giving free rides around City Hall. Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard gathered around the base of the tree with a group of energetic youth and counted down from five, when they hit one the tree lit up! A live DJ played “Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer”, and everyone begin to dance.
To bring the event to a close Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard joined City Council President Derrick Thompson and DPW to handout Wreaths and Christmas Trees to families. Thank you to our hardworking and dedicated stuff for putting together such a wonderful event. We hope everyone is enjoying this marvelous start to the Holiday Season
