Mount Vernon, NY (11/22/2022) - The Mount Vernon Police department hosted a promotional ceremony today at City Hall in council chambers. The ceremony began at 10 am and concluded at 11 am. There were many people in attendance to support the four members of the Mount Vernon Police Department that were promoted today.
Officer Brian Bamfo was promoted to Sergeant today. Sergeant Bamfo is a 9-year veteran of the Mount Vernon Police Department. Before his time in with the police department Sergeant Bamfo served in the Air National Guard for 11 years. He’s a highly decorated military sergeant receiving the Air and Space Achievement Medal, Air and Space Outstanding Unit Award, Air Reserve Forces Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense Medal, and many more. He holds an Associates Degree in Public Administration from Hostos Community College and a second Associates degree from the Community College of the Air Force. Sergeant Bamfo has served in various roles throughout his time with the Mount Vernon Police Department including uniformed patrol, task force, motorcycle unit, and on the mayor’s executive protection detail.
Officer Christopher Grieco was promoted to Sergeant today. He is a 15-year veteran of the Mount Vernon Police Department joining in July of 2007. Sergeant Grieco has served the Mount Vernon Police department in several roles including: in support services as a School Resource officer, a field training officer, a member of the Emergency Services Unit and is currently assigned to Patrol. Prior to his time with the Mount Vernon Police Department Sergeant Grieco joined the NY Army National Guard in 1998 and is still an active member. Sergeant Grieco’s service includes three deployments, once to Iraq and twice to Kuwait. For his service Sergeant Grieco is a recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Accommodation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Overseas Expenditionary Medal, and many other accolades.
Officer Joseph Dimperio was promoted to Detective. He is a 3-year veteran of the Mount Vernon Police department beginning his career in law enforcement starting in July of 2019. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Mercy College. Detective Dimperio worked Patrol before being moved to Violent Crimes Unit in the Detective Division as a Police Officer Investigator. Since joining the Violent Crimes Unit Detective Dimperio has been instrumental in taking 17 firearms off the streets of the City of Mount Vernon.
Officer Jorge Monge was promoted to Detective. Detective Monge is a 15-year veteran of the Mount Vernon Police Department. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from John Jay College and an Associates Degree in Allied Sciences from the Air Force Community College. Detective Monge has been currently serving in the Air National Guard for over 20 years in the US Air Force. He’s a certified medic and he’s been deployed four times including two deployments to Afghanistan. Detective Monge has received 2 Air Medals, Aerial Achievement medal, 2 Air Force Outstanding Unit Awards, and many other accolades. Detective Monge has also been credited with over 50 medical evacuations overseas.
Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard offered some advice to our newly promoted Sergeants and Detectives, “Leadership is not about power or control but restraint. Hold people accountable but don’t use your power as a tool to hurt people, use it as a resource to get them what they need. Lead by example and continue to make the decisions that in the long run will strengthen those who you supervise and your department as a whole.”
Deputy Commissioner David Gibson of the Mount Vernon Police Department said the following,”Today is a great day for promotions. I’m thankful for the men and women of the Mount vernon Police Department who do the work. I appreciate the work you do and so does the city of Mount Vernon. Thank you.”
City Comptroller Darren Morton offered the following statement, “Let’s congratulate these officers for their promotions to new ranks. New ranks mean they deserve high responsibility and higher duty for the work they’ve already done in their careers. We thank our honorees and our entire Mount Vernon Police Department.”
