  • CLEANING TOOLS AND THEIR USES – These questions test your knowledge of various cleaning tools and equipment commonly used by janitors and custodians on the job. You are shown drawings of various tools and equipment. You will be required to recognize the tools and know their proper uses in order to answer the questions correctly.
  • TOOLS USED FOR MINOR MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR – These questions test your knowledge of various tools and equipment. You are shown drawings or tools and equipment used in minor mechanical, electrical, plumbing and carpentry repair. You will be required to recognize the tools and know their proper uses in order to answer the questions correctly.
  • HEALTH AND SAFETY ISSUES IN CUSTODIAL WORK These questions test your knowledge of basic proper safety and health practices in areas of cleaning, building operation and maintenance and other areas relevant to custodians and janitors at the entrance level. You are presented with drawings showing situations of health and safety, which can be found in the work area. You will be required to recognize any unhealthy, unsafe, or otherwise hazardous conditions and know how to correct them in order to answer the questions.

Calculators are PERMITTED for this examination: DEVICES WITH TYPEWRITER KEYBOARDS, SPELL CHECKERS, PERSONAL DIGITAL ASSISTANTS, ADDRESS BOOKS, LANGUAGE TRANSISTORS, DICTIONARIES OR ANY SIMILAR DEVICES ARE PROHIBITED.

APPLICATION FEE: A $15.00 NON-REFUNDABLE FILING FEE IS REQUIRED FOR THIS EXAMINATION. The applicable fee is required and must accompany your application.   • CLERICAL OPERATIONS WITH LETTERS AND NUMBERS – These questions test your skills and abilities in clerical operations involving, comparing, checking and counting. The questions require you to follow the specific directions given for each question which may involve alphabetizing, comparing, checking and counting given groups of letters and/or numbers.

 NOTE: Candidates who receive a passing score (70%) on the written exam must also qualify on a performance test in typing at the required speed of 35 standard words per minute. However, the written score will be used to determine the final test scores and their names will be placed on the eligible list by the written test score. The performance test will be given on a computer and at later date.

SPANISH/PORTUGUESE ORAL PROFICIENCY TEST: Candidates will be subject to a Spanish/Portuguese Language Oral Proficiency examination as prescribed by New York State Department of Civil Service. The Spanish/Portuguese Language Proficiency Test for this examination will be held at a later date. This examination will evaluate proficiency of listening and reading comprehension as well as oral abilities.

 The eligible list established from this examination will be used to fill appropriate vacancies in the City of Mount Vernon City School District.                                                                                                                                                                                  

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS: APPLICANTS MUST BE A RESIDENT OF THE CITY OF MOUNT VERNON FOR NOT LESS THAN ONE YEAR BY THE DATE OF APPLICATION.                                                                          

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR EXAMINATION: Candidates must meet the following requirements on or before the date of filing applications.

Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in a health related field; PLUS two years of athletic training experience where the primary function of the position was providing athletic injury management, emergency care, first aid, evaluation and rehabilitation to athletics.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ACCEPTANCE OF APPLCIATIONS: Must be a certified athletic trainer and possess certification in first aid and CPR per New York State Education Regulations and must possess a valid New York State Driver’s License.

SUBJECTS AND SCOPE OF EXAMINATION: There will be no written or oral test for this examination. If you meet the minimum qualifications, you will receive a rating based upon an evaluation of your training and experience against the duties of the position being tested.

Candidates must first complete an examination application and return it to the City of Mount Vernon, Civil Service Office on or before the filing date of February 14, 2017.

Approved candidates will be sent a notice containing directions to a website address needed to complete a Training and Experience Questionnaire.

The Training and Experience Questionnaire will be available on March 1, 2017 and approved candidates will be required to complete and submit this questionnaire between March 1, 2017 and midnight of March 31, 2017.  NOTE: Candidates will not be able to claim any credit for training and experience gained after the application filing deadline of February 14, 2017.        

Candidates who fail to submit a questionnaire by midnight March 31, 2017 will not receive a rating.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Good knowledge of first aid procedures; ability to establish a positive learning environment that promotes a high level of achievement for all students while considering background and developmental level of the individual students; ability to main accurate records of injury reports, referrals, treatment records, etc.; ability to maintain accurate and complete student documentation as required by law, district policy and administrative regulations and maintain appropriate levels of confidentiality; ability to learn and understand the New York State Education Department regulations; tact and courtesy; discretion; initiative; good and independent judgment; good organization skills; ability to set work priorities and follow up on assignments; good command of the English language; ability to follow complex oral and written instructions; ability to provide athletic training services for all home and away athletic contests; ability to communicate with others; good mobility skills and physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

If your application is received without the required fee, it will be considered incomplete. Only MONEY ORDERS will be accepted for the applications fee. The money order should be made payable to the City of Mount Vernon and be sure to write the examination number on the money order. CASH OR CHECKS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
