Former Mount Vernon Fire Commissioner James “Jimmie” Gleason will be remembered for years to come when a memorial plaque is placed on city’s Fire Headquarters. The public is invited to the dedication ceremony to be held on Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at 11 a.m. at 470 East Lincoln Avenue in Mount Vernon.

The longtime Fire Commissioner who passed away last October is credited with improving firehouse infrastructure and spreading awareness about fire prevention. Gleason served twice as the city’s Fire Commission. He served on the city’s Planning Board, bringing his vast knowledge on fire code regulations and safety to the Board.  Gleason lived in Mount Vernon for over 40 years and was very active within the community and politics. He was predeceased by his wife Margaret and daughter Muffin. Commissioner Gleason has two surviving children, Thomas and Cathlin, who continue their parents’ legacy of service to the city.
