City Council to Recognize Outstanding Citizens

The City Council invites the public to join them as they honor outstanding individuals who have made significant contributions to the Mount Vernon community.  

The ceremony, scheduled to be held on Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, will recognize:

  • Three (3) of the longest serving members of the Mount Vernon Auxiliary Police Department- Chief Freda Horsley, Captain Leonard Simmons, and Captain Brenda Kamp;
  • Innovator, mentor, and youth advocate, Arthur E. Crawford; 
  • Pioneers, one of the first Black property owners in Mount Vernon, and entrepreneurs, Alex and Mildred Saunders (posthumously);
  • Legendary Little League Baseball Coach, James Simmons; and
  • The dynamic “Rapping Grannies” of the Mount Vernon Intergenerational Community Choir- Lavinia Smith, Idelia Cohen, Gussie Harris, Elizabeth Moore, Loretta Novick, Barbara Webster, and Paula Korall.
