Special City Council Meeting

The City Council will hold a special meeting on Monday, March 31, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. for the purpose of adopting an ordinance retaining Ferrandino & Associates as planning consultants to review the proposed text amendment and special permit application for the 42 W. Broad St. project, and other business as may be presented before the Council. 

3rd Annual Animal Shelter Tag Sale

You are invited to join the Mt. Vernon Police Department and the Mt. Vernon Animal Shelter as they host “The 3rd Annual Animal Shelter Tag Sale” on Saturday, May 3, 2014 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. 

Donated merchandise will be for sale, proceeds of which will spport the operation of the shelter.  The animal shelter is pleased to announce that there will also be animals available for adoption.

“The 3rd Annual Animal Shelter Tag Sale” will be held at the Mt. Vernon Animal Shelter located at 600 Garden Avenue and on the adjacent parking lot.  

Intent to Release Funds – Grace Terrace Senior Housing

On or about April 13, 2014 the City of Mount Vernon will submit a request to HUD for the release of $400,000 in HOME Program funds under the HOME Investment Partnerships Act at title II of the Cranston Gonzalez National Affordable Housing Act, as amended, 42 U.S.C. 12701 et seq., to undertake a project known as Grace Terrace Senior Housing Development, for the purpose of constructing affordable housing for senior citizens at125-129 South Fifth Avenue,Mount Vernon, NY10550.

City Council Radio Show

The next City Council Radio Show is scheduled for Monday, April 21, 2014 at 7:00 p.m.  The one hour program-designed to update residents on the latest City Council news-will feature Darren Morton, Recreation Commissioner.  He will discuss the department’s programs, initiatives, overall vision, and direction.

2014 Summer Youth Employment Applications

The Youth Bureau want to remind the city’s youth that 2014 Summer Youth Employment applications are available on the following websites: 

The applications will be available until Thursday, April 10, 2014, which is also the last day to return the completed application with the requested documents.

All youth ages 14-19 who are in school are encouraged to print out an application at one of the above listed websites. Applications should be returned to the Youth Bureau, located on the 3rd floor of City Hall at One Roosevelt Square in Mount Vernon during from 3 – 4 pm from April 7th -10th. Please read the application carefully and return completed applications with all requested original documents.

Youth must be Mount Vernon residents in order to be considered for Summer Employment.

Given the economic climate, the department is seeking donations for employment and training programs that operate throughout the year. Mayor Ernest D. Davis to Deliver State of the City Address

Mayor Ernest D. Davis will deliver his 2014 State of the City address at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 in the City Council Chambers at City Hall.

At that time the mayor will provide an update on accomplishments and new developments over the past year. He will also provide insight on projects and plans for 2014.

Some key announcements the Mayor will expand upon during his speech include:

  • Infrastructure improvements
  • Economic Development
  • Projects and proposals having long range benefits for the city

Please arrive at least 20 minutes prior to the address as seating is limited in the City Council Chambers. An overflow room in the Memorial Room will feed live coverage. In addition, the speech will be live streamed via the city’s website at

ARB Meeting Change – Mtg tonight Mar. 21, 2014

The regular ARB for March 26, 2014 has been cancelled and there will be a special ARB meeting tonight Friday, March 21, 2014 @ 6:00PM.


City Council to Hold Public Hearing on Proposed Text Amendment to the Zoning Code

The City Council will hold a public hearing for proposed amendments to Sections 267-18C and 267-28E of the City of Mount Vernon Zoning Ordinance which would permit multifamily dwellings by special permit within the DB Downtown Business District in the Fleetwood neighborhood of Mount Vernon, subject to certain applicability standards.  Said public hearing will be held on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers.

Notice of Public Hearing for the proposed amendment to the City of Mount Vernon Zoning Ordinance applying RMF-SC Multi-Family Senior Citizen Housing Floating Overlay Zone and related changes to the City of Mount Vernon Zoning Map for property located at 125-129 South Fifth Avenue (Grace Terrace Site), is scheduled to be held on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers.
