Farmers Market Opens Thursday, June 20

Looking to buy farm fresh fruit and vegetables this summer? Beginning this Thursday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. the Mount Vernon Farmers Market will open  at City Hall’s plaza. The market will return as a traditional market offering more diversified offerings to market goers.

The Farmer’s Market was first introduced to City Hall Plaza in 2006. People liked the idea of the market being so centrally located and since then the market has become a weekly shopping place for people to pick up select favorites and to try new items during the summer and early fall.

Besides the usual fare of seasonal pickings, the market will also offer baked goods, cooked food, handmade soaps and crafts. Information on healthy living, free blood pressure screenings as well as a selection of nontraditional green grocer items will also be available. “With more local establishments wanting to become involved, it became necessary for us to think about expanding beyond the focus of the past few years,” said Rene Davis, this year’s Market Coordinator.

Local gardeners are encouraged to join the market’s Home Growers Cooperative. Booth space will be made available for members  to sell backyard and container grown plants and produce. City officials hope to encourage more home gardening and give gardeners an opportunity to cash in on an overabundance of home grown crops.

The market will run weekly on Thursdays from 10am to 2pm, June 20th until October 17th. Vendors are still welcome.
