About Us

The Department of Public Works is the most vital and paramount agency within the City of Mount Vernon, New York. DPW is divided into operating bureaus under the leadership of the Commissioner of Public Works. Each bureau is responsible for all matters falling under their respective jurisdiction. The Department of Public Works provides and maintains the City's physical facilities through its various operations bureaus and services: 

The mission of the Department of Public Works is to protect the public health, safety, and welfare through proactive planning and implementation of policies designed to provide high levels of critical services and to enhance the quality of life for all citizens and business owners in the City of Mount Vernon.

The Commissioner's Office

Serves as the central office for the agency and is responsible for the overall management and direction of the Department of Public Works. This office receives constituent complaints nd concerns through phone calls, emails, and walk-ins and is responsible for directing those concerns to the appropriate bureau and personnel.

Additional responsibilities include the establishment and/or administration of personnel policies, processing of payroll documents, purchase requisitions, contracts, and maintaining budgetary information.

This office also conducts internal analyses of the effectiveness and efficiency of the Department operations. Responsibilities include the preparation of an annual budget request, and quarterly budget forecasts along with detailed analysis of Department expenditures.
