Larry Barnes honed his unparalleled talents right here in his hometown of Mount Vernon at Jimmy Greco's Gym on Gramatan Avenue. Barnes was an unstoppable force, boasting an amateur record of 45-5 and a professional record of 44-3. He would put Mount Vernon's name on the map for boxing: a two time NY Empire State Games champion and the Welterweight champion of the world that would lead into his induction into the NJ Boxing Hall of Fame. Barnes would soon find a career path in coaching, as he returning to his alma mater Mount Vernon High School as its swimming coach in the late 90s and later the head boxing trainer of the Westchester Boxing Club.

Lowes Moore has represented his hometown beautifully on and off the court since his days as a rising Mount Vernon High School Basketball star. Moore sports an impressive legacy in the NBA, playing for the New Jersey Nets, Cleveland Cavaliers, and the San Diego Clippers. He's also a two time Continental Basketball Association (CBA) champion for the Albany Patroons. His goals later in life, however, would be shaped by his faith and his passion to help young people rise. In 1986, Moore received his preaching license from Macedonia Baptist Church and would become a motivational speaker set to inspire generations of children through various initiatives. He is now the executive director of the Mount Vernon Boys & Girls Club, serving the same place that initially helped him to flourish.

The Highland Avenue fence separating the sidewalk area from the Hutchinson River Parkway has been transformed by our hardworking #MVDPW crews. This is a historic achievement as this area has been left in disrepair for more than a decade. Small tasks such as these are what DPW will continue to tackle moving forward, furthering progress throughout the City. #SmallWins #DPW

Heavy D, one of the greatest rappers of all time and a man responsible for bringing Hip-Hop to its next plateau, represents the heart and soul of Mount Vernon. The son of nurse Eulahlee Lee and machine technician Clifford Vincent Myers, Heavy spent his formative years in our City honing his musical skills with the like of fellow hometown hero Eddie F. They formed the group Heavy D & the Boys, the first act signed to Uptown Records, and released a string of hits ("Somebody for Me," "Now That We Found Love," "Moneyearnin' Mount Vernon," and many more) that launched them into early success. He would then cement his legacy by paving the way in the 1990s including Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Jodeci, Soul for Real, and Diddy.

The son of Mount Vernon Pentecostal minister and local beautician, Denzel Washington would take the early lessons he learned in his hometown to change the world. These lessons would begin at the Mount Vernon Boys & Girls Club: "At first, it was just a place to go and have some fun. You know, I didn’t realize I was being taught a lesson for my life." Once he had his eyes set on acting, Mount native and premier acting coach Tina Sattin would help him develop his skills. Today we salute Denzel Washington, one of the greatest actors in Hollywood history, for the many achievements he has made.

Nina Simone is one of the most remarkable artists of the twentieth century not only because of her unparalleled talent but because she used her gifts to create a legacy of liberation, love, and empowerment for a people struggling to gain equality in an unjust system. Did you know during the height of the civil rights movement and her artistic peak she chose to live in Mount Vernon? Ms. Simone would become neighbors with Malcolm X, Sidney Poitier, Ossie Davis, and Ruby Dee in the 1960s forming a small fellowship of black leaders dedicated to seeing the world change.
