SENIOR CITIZEN ACTIVITIES

"Of Mount Vernon's estimated population of 75,000, approximately 15,000 are aged 60 and over."

 

For over 80 years, the City of Mount Vernon has made provisions to address the recreational needs of its senior residents. Programs and services are made available through funding from federal, state, county and local grants.

A full range of activities are offered on a daily at 2 senior centers in the city and are available to seniors in the City of Mount Vernon regardless of which center they regularly attend. Free transportation is provided to and from the centers from Monday through Friday. All medical services are FREE to Mount Vernon senior citizens. All centers are accessible to the handicapped.

SENIOR NUTRITION PROGRAM

Persons aged 60 and older are eligible to receive hot nutritious meals served at the Armory or Doles Center. Noontime meals are served 5 times per week at both locations. The Armory serves meals on weekends. Meals are prepared at the Armory. Nutritionists and dieticians are available to discuss good nutrition.

SENIOR CITIZEN IDENTIFICATION CARDS

County residents age 60 or over are eligible to receive Westchester County Senior Citizens identification cards. These residence permits entitle the holder to special rates at County-owned parks and recreational facilities, reduced fare on the "Bee-line" bus system (at age 65 or over) and discounts with many merchants. The Westchester County Mobile Department of Senior Programs & Services visits Mount Vernon from May through August and offers city seniors an opportunity to obtain I.D. cards locally.
