Mayor Young kicks off Haiti Relief Collection Drive with Marlene Pierrot

Mayor Young kicks off Haiti relief collection drive On Friday, January 15th, Mayor Clinton I. Young, Jr. announced the kickoff of a collection drive to supply much needed supplies to the survivors of Tuesday’s devastating earthquake in Haiti. Supplies being collected are clothing, canned/non-perishable food items and baby diapers and formula. Collection bins will be set up on the first floor of Mount Vernon City Hall. The collection drive is a collaboration between the City of Mount Vernon, the United Black Clergy of Westchester and Sacred Heart church in Mount Vernon. Reverend W. Darin Moore, President of the United Black Clergy spoke at the press conference as did Mount Vernon residents Marlene Pierrot and Dr. Osman Joasil, Haitian immigrants who both recounted personal stories of tragedy involving family members in Haiti. “On television, we see the horrible images of the devastation in Haiti. However, to hear in person, the personal accounts from Ms. Pierrot and Dr. Joasil really brings this tragedy close to home.” said Mayor Young. “I encourage all of our residents to help in any way that they can. In addition to donating supplies, financial contributions to the various relief organizations will make a big difference.” Aid agency contact information for financial donations: American Red Cross: www.redcross.org; 1-800-REDCROSS Direct Relief International: www.directrelief.org; 805-964-4767 Doctors Without Borders: www.doctorswithoutborders.org; 212-679-6800 Operation USA: www.opusa.org; 1-800-678-7255 The Salvation Army: www.salvationarmy.org; 1-800-SAL-ARMY Yele Haiti: www.yele.org;
