The Mount Vernon Youth Bureau is the lead agency for municipal youth programming within the City of Mount Vernon. With a focus on youth advocacy, juvenile delinquency prevention and youth development, the Mount Vernon Youth Bureau receives more than 1 million dollars in federal, state and local funding annually for the development, delivery and oversight of safe and effective programs for ages 7-21. Since 1965, the Mount Vernon Youth Bureau has provided direct services through after-school, summer, recreational, intergenerational, job readiness training and employment programs; referrals; advocacy projects; assessments and counseling.
The Mount Vernon Youth Bureau provides a myriad of programs which differ in frequency and nature each year and are implemented according to the needs of the community. However, there are eight mainstay services which operate throughout the year, which include the following:
- Juvenile Delinquency and Violence Prevention Programs provides police/ youth communication, mentoring, assessments, training and case management activities for at risk youth ages 12-21
- College/ Career Preparation provides in-school counseling, referrals and workshops to youth ages 14-18; offers Mayors Memorial Educational Assistance Program (scholarships) to families who meet federal income guidelines
- Intergenerational Services provides mentoring and academic enrichment activities to youth ages 7-13; Mount Vernon intergenerational Choir
- Mount Vernon S.T.R.O.N.G Program provides academic support, job readiness and occupational skills training, special interest academies and performing arts to youth ages 14 - 21
- Safe Haven After-school Program provides free homework assistance, recreational and cultural enrichment activities for youth ages 7-12
- Safe Haven Summer Camp provides a full day, 6 week, low cost summer program which includes youth development activities and field trips for youth ages 6-13
- Substance Abuse Prevention Services provides Mount Vernon Community That CARES Coalition activities which include but are not limited to youth development activities; youth and parent surveys; assessments of alcohol and drug outlets; coalition building; neighborhood services, and community referrals
- Youth Employment Services provides job readiness skills training, referrals and placement for youth ages 14-21
