Veterans Service Agency

The City of Mount Vernon has a long standing history of recognizing and serving the needs of those who served to protect our nation in times of peace and war. In fact, in paying honor to our veterans, the City of Mount Vernon, in 1931, named its largest field at the time, Memorial Field.

The Mount Vernon Veterans Service Agency acts as a liaison between veterans, their dependents and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Those individuals who served our country as a member of the armed forces during Korean War, World War I, World War II, Vietnam, and the Persian gulf Wars. Assistance is also provided to persons who served this country but whose tour of duty did not include wartime activity. The agency additionally coordinates activities and benefits with other public and private agencies on behalf of those seeking assistance.

The Agency works closely with the Mount Vernon Central Committee for Veterans Affairs, a well-respected group of former service persons who are the caretakers of Mount Vernon's Memorial Room. The Memorial Room contains military memorabilia that has been collected for a number of years.

The Veterans Service Agency is responsible for several activities involving veteran participation in community presentations and ceremonies. The Agency coordinates the City's Annual Memorial Day Parade, actively participates in the Independence Day Celebration and organizes the Annual Veterans Day Ceremony.

A driving force in the establishment of Mount Vernon High School's Air Force JROTC, the Veterans Service Agency strives to ensure that young men and women pursuing military careers are provided with quality service when they return home.
