Why does it take so long for a permit?

There is documentation and information that must be submitted with each application before it can be accepted by the building department front desk staff. Once the application has been accepted and the fee paid, the application along with all required documentation is prepared for the Plans Examiner to review in the order in which it is received. The more accurate your submission, the faster the permit may be issued.
