“What’s the Word?”….ARTS ON THIRD!

On Sunday, September 6th, between 12 noon and 7:00 pm, Mount Vernon’s Mayor Ernest Davis with the Mount Vernon Arts Council and Montefiore Hospital present its seventh annual “Arts On Third” Arts Festival in Mount Vernon New York.  Arts on Third has established itself as Westchester County’s largest and most prestigious cultural celebration.

“Arts On Third”  attracts over 75,000 attendees and this year boasts three exciting stages: The Headliner Stage, The Power Industry Stage hosted by Power 105  FM and The Cultural Stage.

Headlining this year  is Mount Vernon’s own Al. B. Sure, Sure, a former Mount Vernon High School QB, went on to become a three time Grammy nominated R & B singer and a major producer during the “ New Jack Swing” era.  He is credited for introducing recording artists, Jodeci , Tevin Campbell  ,Faith Evans, Dave Hollister, Case, and Usher to the music world. Doug E. Fresh, The World’s Greatest Entertainer, and crowd favorite, is a producer, business man and is known as the original “Human Beat Box” who has been a performer at the festival since its inception; and Tito Puente, Jr , son of the incomparable band leader Tito Puente is back by popular demand. He is keeping the legacy alive through performances of his father’s classic hits , as well as his original mambo compositions.

Also, on the playbill are Jazz musician, Tex Allen,  Rap Pioneer Roxanne Shante, reggae artists, Red Fox, Jahteff and Little John, Cece Peniston (Finally), Pop Dollarz, GQ of “Disco Nights” fame, singer/actress, Cheryl “Pepsi” Riley and Desi Arnaz’ and Lucille Ball’s grandson, composer Joe Luckinbill.

The Cultural Stage captures the diverse make up and talents of the Mount Vernon community. One of the highlights of the “Cultural Stage” is Phyllis Yvonne Stickney and her brother, Timothy Stickney .  Ms. Stickney,  best known and respected for her work in film, stage, television and comedy, will perform an excerpt from “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf.”. Floyd Cromwell will be holding off stage auditions for “For Colored Girls as well and excerpts from the gospel musicals “Black Nativity” and Who Side Are you On? will also be performed. VH1’s “Black Ink Crew” will make a special appearance as well.
Other artists scheduled for the cultural stage are: Venezuelan violinist, Yamileth Furchi, owner and operator of the Alamo Restaurant who has played the violin since she was 12 and grew up helping develop the renowned integrated Venezuelan orchestral system,  Ballet Folklorico Nuevo Amanecer, a traditional Mexican Dance company,The Irish Step Dancers, The Korean Fan Dancers who wowed the crowd at the Festival Kick-Off at Maggie Spillane’s and Italian Opera singer Nathan Resika who has been praised for his “sonorous” voice by critics and colleagues alike.  

The free family friendly event spans over six city blocks with various activities such as the Children’s Village featuring interactive games, arts & crafts and storytelling; Artists Row where visual artists exhibit their handcrafted art and authors are on hand for book signings and readings: the Pedestrian Mall with over 100 merchandise vendors and the “Healthy Living Pavilion” for attendees to receive free screenings and obtain holistic health and wellness information.  Sports entertainment includes 2 olympic size rings; each ring has exhibitions of : boxing, martial arts ,body building and wrestling. This year’s wrestling will include FBI (The Full Bloooded IItalians) and former WWE Champion and recognized body builder “Mr. Atlas.

This year’s health focus is “Domestic Violence Awareness”. Every minute, 20 people are victims of  intimate partner abuse.   85 percent of domestic abuse victims are women and 15 percent  are men. Mount Vernon ranks high among domestic violence incidents in Westchester County.  The “Arts on Third”  health focus is to shed light on this fact, encourage the community to break the silence and aid in ending the violence. It takes all of our voices to stop domestic violence.
