If you’re looking for something to do this weekend that’s close to home, check out the 150th Anniversary Celebration at Wartburg Fall Festival. This community-wide family event celebration with games, food, entertainment, vendors, information booths and more will take place on the beautiful 34-acre Mount Vernon campus on Saturday, October 11, 2014 from 10 am to 4 pm.
Founded by William Alfred Passavant, D.D, a pastor, editor, missionary, educator, church strategist and founder of hospitals, orphanages, and homes for the aging, Passavant became a key figure in 19th century American Lutheranism. In 1865, Passavant set out to realize his vision of a community of mercy to serve New York area children who had been orphaned by the Civil War and the many terrible epidemics of the time.
His efforts led to the establishment of The Wartburg Orphans Farm School. The Wartburg has been serving Mount Vernon since 1865, and since 1896 has been providing services for seniors including independent living in private townhomes and affordable apartments, assisted living and nursing home care.
