This year ALL homeowners receiving Basic STAR property tax exemption MUST register with the New York State Tax Department in order to receive the exemption in year 2014 and after. The STAR exemption is available for owner-occupied, primary residences where the combined income of resident owners and their spouses is $500,000 or less. The registration deadline is December 31, 2013.
Senior Citizens receiving Enhanced STAR property tax exemption are not affected by this new requirement and do not need to register. To qualify for the Enhanced STAR you must be 65 years or older and the combined income of resident owners and their spouses must be $81,900 or less.
Eligibility in 2014 is based on income information from the 2012 tax year. Income means federal “adjusted gross income” minus the “taxable amount” of total distributions from individual retirement accounts or individual retirement annuities (IRAs).
YOU MUST ANNUALLY PROVIDE DOCUMENTATION IN ORDER TO RECEIVE THE ENHANCED STAR TAX EXEMPTION. FAILURE TO DO SO CAN RESULT IN YOUR RECEIVING BASIC STAR TAX EXEMPTION ONLY.
