National Day of Prayer – Thursday, May 2, 2013

Mount Vernon will be joining communities throughout the nation participating in the annual day observance as established by the United States Congress and enacted into law in 1952.

“Any opportunity we can, we must come together to reaffirm our commitment to peace in our communities and to inspire hope in our children that their futures will be free from negative forces that threaten to destroy our families, our communities and nation,” said Mayor Ernest D. Davis. “Coming together like this helps us gain strength and resiliency to move forward as a united community.”

President Harry S. Truman signed a bill proclaiming a National Day of Prayer in 1952. In 1982 a National Prayer Committee was formed and in 1988 the law was amended so that the National Day of Prayer would be held on the first Thursday of May. Today a National Day of Prayer Task Force exists to coordinate the many events occuing across the country. Although the National Day of Prayer is not a public holiday, it is recognized as a day of prayer and peace that is becoming more meaningful in light of unsettling events are happening in communities across the world.

All Mount Vernon  officials, unions, schools, churches, community residents, businesses and friends are invited to come together in prayer as Mount Vernon seeks strength, wisdom, salvation, guidance and protection for our families, churches, community, city, state and nation. An interdenominational prayer will begin at 6:30 p.m. on City Hall’s Plaza at 1 Roosevelt Square. Religious leaders from various churches will be in attendance to deliver prayer.  Scripture, readings and music will also be offered.

Bring the family to participate in this community prayer.
