President Harry S. Truman signed a bill proclaiming a National Day of Prayer in 1952. In 1982 a National Prayer Committee was formed and in 1988 the law was amended so that the National Day of Prayer would be held on the first Thursday of May. Today a National Day of Prayer Task Force exists to coordinate the many events occuing across the country. Although the National Day of Prayer is not a public holiday, it is recognized as a day of prayer and peace that is becoming more meaningful in light of unsettling events are happening in communities across the world.
All Mount Vernon officials, unions, schools, churches, community residents, businesses and friends are invited to come together in prayer as Mount Vernon seeks strength, wisdom, salvation, guidance and protection for our families, churches, community, city, state and nation. An interdenominational prayer will begin at 6:30 p.m. on City Hall’s Plaza at 1 Roosevelt Square. Religious leaders from various churches will be in attendance to deliver prayer. Scripture, readings and music will also be offered.

Zumba classes will take place at the Transcend Dance studio on Monday evenings from 7:15pm – 8:15pm. Zumba classes feature exotic rhythms set to high-energy Latin and international beats. This program is for participants ages 13 and older. Program fee: $70 per 10 week session. April 15th – June 24th, 2013. Zumba Gold classes will be held on Tuesday mornings at the Mount Vernon Armory from 10:00am – 10:45am. Zumba Gold uses the classic Zumba formula and modifies the moves and pacing to suit the needs of older participants. Program Fee: $40 per 10 sessions. April 16 – June 25, 2013. Registration for this class will be taken at the Mount Vernon Department of Recreation, 1 Roosevelt Square, Room 11.
Looking for something fun and educational for your child to do after school? The Mount Vernon Department of Recreation offers after school activities for children ages 5 – 12 at the Pennington Elementary School. Children will receive homework assistance every day while also having the opportunity to partake in fun recreational activities like basketball, martial arts, tennis, card and board games, arts and crafts and more! This program operates Monday – Friday from 3:00pm – 6:00pm. Program Fee: $375.00 per 10 – week session ( Less than $2.50 per hour!)

The Mount Vernon Animal Shelter is having a tag and bake sale on Saturday, May 18, 2013 from 11 am until 4 pm to raise additional funds to support the publically run shelter. “Everyone knows I have a fondness for animals and the work our volunteers do at the shelter is commendable,” said Mayor Ernest D. Davis. “I want to encourage everyone to come out and see the great job our staff does as well taking care of the animals.”
The shelter runs under the supervision of the Mount Vernon Police Department and has dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens ready for adoption. This fundraising effort will also offer animal lovers an opportunity to tour the facility and learn training tips from the shelter’s trainers and visit a doggie kissing booth. Music and sweet treats will be available.
