Westchester Community College Brings Program to Mount Vernon Seniors – 1/7/2013

From Friday, February 1, 2013 until Friday, February 22, 2013 the Westchester Community College’s Institute for Mature Adults will be offering seniors an opportunity to learn about the beauty, diversity and traditions of Africa. For four consecutive Fridays the college will be conducting a two hour segment beginning at9:30 a.m. and ending at 11:30 a.m. at the Mount Vernon Armory. 

Geraldine Christiana, Director of Senior programs commented, “This is a wonderful opportunity for our seniors to continue their learning experience without having to travel to the college’s main campus.” Immediately following the sessions seniors can enjoy the daily lunches that are a part of the Armory’s nutrition program.

“Mainstream,” a unique initiative by the college that offers innovative educational

programming and career change options designed especially for mature adults over 50 will be conducting a 4 week program at the Armory this coming February. The Mount Vernon Senior Center provides programming to one of the largest ethnically diverse senior populations in Westchester County. 

The non-credit course will be taught by Bob Jalongo, former Ambassador of Kenya to the United Nations, Europe & Africa who, for nearly 40 years, travelled the world in different high level capacities. An Adjunct Instructor and Workshop Presenter at Westchester Community College, Ambassador Jalongo will explore the rich culture and diversity of Africa, the heritage and achievements of its people and the continent’s contributions to the world.

The program, funded by a grant from the Westchester County Department of Senior Programs and Services, will run on four consecutive Fridays. Beginning on February 1, 2013 and ending on February 22, 2013. Each segment will last two hours, beginning at 9:30 a.m. and ending at 11:30 a.m. As part of the Armory normal program, senior lunches will be served after each segment.

Seniors who wish to attend the classes must register in advance with the Mount Vernon Office for the Aging, 914.665.2315.

“We want to thank the college and the County for bringing this opportunity for cultural enrichment and education to our seniors,” said Darrin Morton, Commissioner of the Mount Vernon Recreation Department.
