Special City Council Meeting

The City Council will hold a special meeting on Wednesday, January 2, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers to adopt the annual estimate for Fiscal Year 2013.

The City Council will hold a press conference on Monday, December 31, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. in the Mayor’s Conference Room to discuss the annual estimate for Fiscal Year 2013 and budget reforms.

Youth Bureau G.E.M Program Celebrates Kwanzaa – 12/26/2012

The Youth Bureau will be recognizing all G.E.M. participants (Girls Embracing Maturity) for their dedication to the program over the past year and will be hosting a G.E.M. Kwanzaa Celebration in honor of their achievements.

Kwanzaa, an African American celebration of heritage and culture, celebrated from December 26 through January 1, with each of the seven days focusing on one of seven core values; unity, self-determination,  collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith.

The Girls Embracing Maturity (G.E.M) Program was designed to help young ladies mature and develop positive attitudes and attributes. The programs goal is to equip the girls with the tools that are needed to become resilient, compassionate, authentic role models for their community.

The public is invited to attend and participate in the celebration.

Senior Kwanza Celebration at the Doles Center – 12/24/12

Kwanzaa, a week-long cultural celebration recognized by and for descendants of the African diaspora to instill racial pride and unity will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 26, 2012 at 11 a.m. in the Senior Room at the Doles Community Center at 250 South 6th Avenue. Seniors registered in the Doles Center and Armory are invited to attend the festivities that will include a performance by Brother Abishai Ben Reuben, African drummer.

 

MOUNT VERNON TO HOLD A MOMENT OF SILENCE AND PRAYER FOR VICTIMS OF NEWTON, CONNECTICUT SCHOOL SHOOTINGS

On Friday, December 21 at 11:00 a.m. Mayor Ernest D. Davis is requesting the city to participate in a moment of silence for the families and victims of the Newtown, Connecticut school shootings. The moment of silence will coincide with the tolling of church bells in the Newtown community. Immediately following a prayer will be conducted in the Rotunda of City Hall.  Churches and individuals desiring to join in the prayer are asked to assemble at 10:45 a.m
