NEW FIRE TRUCKS DELIVERED TO CITY OF MOUNT VERNON

New Ladder and Two Pumper Trucks Boost Fire Protection in the City

Mayor Young and fire fighters pose with new trucks

Mayor Clinton I. Young, Jr. announced today that three new fire trucks were delivered to the City of Mount Vernon on Tuesday, September 6, 2011. Two new Pierce pumpers and a ladder truck were on display during a news conference held at City Hall to mark the occasion. The new state-of-the-art apparatus will replace three 25-year old fire trucks in the Fire Department’s fleet. The new trucks were purchased with about $1.8 million in capital projects funds.

“Mount Vernon deserves the best,” noted Mayor Clinton I. Young, Jr. “Gone are the days when we were forced to beg and borrow equipment or depend heavily on mutual aid to protect our citizens. The new Pierce ladder truck and two pumpers are part of my plan to enhance the emergency response capability in our communities. The trucks are certainly a crucial investment in our ability to protect the lives and property of our citizens. I commend my staff, the Capital Projects Committee and the Fire Department for partnering with us to move our city forward” said Young.

New Ladder Truck will enhance apartment building rescues

Pierce Manufacturing Inc. is the leading North American manufacturer of custom and state-of-the-art fire apparatus. The new Pierce 105 Aerial ladder truck is energy efficient and equipped with a rear camera; vehicle data recorder; Detroit diesel engine with 500 horsepower to climb the deepest hill and reach beyond a 13 story building. The twin pumpers can pump up to 1500 gallons of water per minute. It also houses a 30 gallon foam tank for chemical fires. The pumpers are equipped with low hose bed for easier access to the hose firefighter safety, rear video camera, state-of-the-art instrumentation and a vehicle data box. The new trucks will be in service in approximately two weeks.  The one pumper and the aerial truck will be housed at Station 2 on Fulton Avenue and the other engine at the Fire HQ on Lincoln Avenue.

“It’s been a number of years since the Fire Department received brand new equipment. In my 25 years in fire service, I have never seen an administration make such a tremendous investment and commitment to fire protection in this city. The new apparatus will enhance the fire fighting capability and safety for the citizens and fire fighters in the City of Mount Vernon. The City of Mount Vernon is more prepared now for emergency situations than every before. The new trucks are a welcomed addition to the city,” stated Noah Lighty, Mount Vernon Fire Commissioner.
